Why we built this
Most of us didn’t grow up as prodigies. We learned chess the way a lot of people do — playing online, losing more than we won, and feeling like everyone else had read a manual we never got. The advice out there was either far too basic or written for players already rated well above us.
Pawn & Plan started as a set of notes we kept for ourselves: the ideas that actually moved our results, explained in plain language. Over time those notes became guides, and the guides became this site. Everything here is written for the player we used to be — curious, a little frustrated, and ready to improve if someone would just explain why.
How we teach chess
We believe in understanding over memorizing, plain English over jargon, and practical ideas that actually win games under 1200 — taught in the order that helps you most.
Who it’s for
If openings confuse you, if a single blunder keeps ruining otherwise good games, or if you’re improving but unsure what to study next, you’re exactly who we write for. We won’t assume you want to spend hundreds of hours studying — we’ll just help you play fewer random moves and make better plans, one short guide at a time.
